San Severino Marche
It is located at an altitude of 344 m in the Potenza valley, on the right side of the river. It grew up on the ruins of the Roman colony of Septempeda, it is formed by two nucleuses: uptown and downtown, or the castle, with a medieval aspect. Uptown is almost completely uninhabited but downtown is a very animated commercial centre, especially for agriculture (cereals, grapes, tobacco, beets, etc.), livestock breeding and industry (engineering, construction, chemicals, plastics and food). Very important are the medieval remains: San Lorenzo in the Doliolo church (XI century), with its beautiful bell tower and crypt, the Smeducci tower, the Old and New Cathedrals, both restructured and with the original large bell towers. The Renaissance period was also important with a lot of works by local painters; in this period a lot of buildings were built too: the Madonna della Pace by Pinturicchio, the New Cathedral and the wooden choir in the Old Cathedral. Near there is the Santa Maria del Glorioso church of the 16th century. We also have to suggest a visit to the Sant’Eustachio church – cave.
