Tolentino
It is at an altitude of 224 m, in the high Chienti valley, on the left side of the river. Important here are agriculture and livestock breeding. Very traditional in Tolentino is leather workmanship and the industrial production of leather goods. There are also industries of paper, mechanics, packaging and furniture. There are thermal baths and tourist facilities, especially for the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of San Nicola da Tolentino. The medieval centre is surrounded by ancient walls and has a historical and artistic importance. The most important sites are the San Nicola Cathedral, built in the Gothic style in XIII-XV centuries, partly rebuilt and painted in the XVI century and from the Baroque period it has an important Gothic doorway, cloisters and the San Nicola chapel, with a large ‘cross’ vaulted ceiling, completely painted with noteworthy frescoes by artists from the Rimini school of the XIV century. Next to the Cathedral are the Civic and Ceramics Museums. Very interesting is the Neoclassical Cathedral with parts of original medieval church, the Gothic and Baroque church of San Francesco, the old Romanesque Gothic church of Carita, the medieval ‘Devil’s Bridge’ and the Theatre of XVIII-XIX which is one of the most beautiful in the region.
