It is situated in the Montefeltro, at an altitude of 550 m on the right side of the high valley of Marecchia. It is an agricultural, trade, and livestock breeding (cheese) centre as well as a tourist destination. Situated between two rocky hills, Roccione (Pen) and Rupe (Billi), the city was once fortified and retains the ruins of the fortress of Malatesta. Also of interest is the late Renaissance cathedral (restructured) and the Diocesan Museum. In the territory stands the romantic Messa bridge parish church.
