Pergola
The city is situated at an altitude of 264 m at the mouth of the Cinisco River valley in Cesano. It is an agriculturtural-trade centre, with some industries (clothing and furniture). The cathedral is from 1258, rebuilt in the XIX century with a romantic bell tower; Inside there is the Gothic reliquary of Saint Secondo of the fifteenth century. There are also the Romanesque-Gothic churches of St. Francesco and St. Giacomo, both from the thirteenth century and with important works of local art. The Town Hall was built in 1750. In Cartoceto, a village in the borough of Pergola, there is an interesting group of Roman sculptures in gilded bronze that was found in 1946, now kept at the National Museum of Ancona. It was probably one group consisting of two equestrian statues of men and two standing women. Through skilful restoration the fragments were reassembled into a large feminine and virile figure; Particularly interesting are two horse heads with exquisite workmanship. The bronzes of Cartoceto, dating back to the Julio-Claudian age, are works of high artistic quality of fine modeling and wise use of gilding. Various attempts to identify the two figures as Livia or Agrippina Major and Druso Caesar or Tiberius are not mutually accepted by experts.
